What Happens If We Pronounce The Mantras Wrongly ?

Mantras are of two kinds and they are “Veda Mantras” and “Other Mantras”. When we chant the Veda Mantras, we should chant them with proper “swarams” also known as syllable like :
Swaritham – High Syllable
Udhatham – Medium Syllable
Anudhatham – Low Syllable
and with proper pronunciations. Only when we chant the mantras with proper syllables and pronounce them correctly, we can get the benefit of chanting the particular mantra. “Swarams” may not be necessary for most mantras. However, the correct pronunciations is extremely important because, when a mantra is pronounced wrongly, it might result in bad effects.

What Happens If We Pronounce The Mantras Wrongly ?

Only when we chant the mantras with proper syllables and pronounce them correctly, we can get the benefit of chanting the particular mantra. “Swarams” may not be necessary for most mantras.

Once a upon a time, there came a Ganapathigal (Veda Pundit) to visit Shri Acharya of Sringeri. He told the acharya, “Swamiji, I am leading a very pious life and do not commit sins. I have been performing homas, yagyas, et cetera accordingly. Sometimes back, my wife past away”.

He continued, “As it is very important that I have a wife to perform my daily Agni Hotra Homas, I married another lady. But, she too had passed away very recently. Swamiji, I am performing all my Nithya Karmas in a proper manner and I conduct homas regularly for the well being of my family. Even my astrological charts does not have any doshas. Furthermore, I am reciting the “Devi Mahatmyam” daily. Why am I going through such bad things in life ? Am I cursed ?”

Shri Acharya meditated upon the Almighty for a while after listening to Ganapathigal’s story and asked him, “You said that you recite the “Devi Mahatmyam” on a daily basis, right ? Fine, I want you to recite the “Kavacham” from “Devi Mahatmyam” in front of me, right now”.

As per Shri Acharya’s instructions, Ganapathigal started reciting the “Kavacham”. During his recitation, he made a mistake in a mantra. Instead of chanting “Bharyaam Rakshathu Bhairavi”, he recited “Bharyaam Bakshathu Bharavi”. Instead of pronouncing “RA”, Ganapathigal has been pronouncing “BA” all these while. On hearing this, Shri Acharya told him “see, this is the mistake that has been causing all your sorrows”.

Shri Acharya informed that “Rakshathu” means let Goddess Bhairavi save my wife and on the other hand, “Bakshathu” means let Goddess Bhairavi take my away my wife. From now onwards, you must not make this kind of mistakes in while chanting the mantras. If you recite the mantras properly, you will have a peaceful and happy life free from sorrows as you are already performing Agni Hotra Homas on a daily basis”.

This incident clearly illustrates to us that we should chant mantras with proper letters, sounds, and pronunciations in order to attain the good benefits.

      Dear Ludovic,

First of all thank you for visiting Dhevee.org and hope you are fine.

Yes, you may listen to the mantra too.

However, keep in mind that chanting the mantra (correctly) provides 100% benefits as compared to listening it, which might give you 50% benefits.

      Thank you.
