Dhorbi Karanam, Shuklambaradharam, and Lord Ganesha

At the temple or at the abode of Lord Ganesha, when we chant the Ganesha Dyanam Sloka (also known as Ganapati Dyanam Sloka) “Shuklambaradharam” and we knock our forehead with knuckles. Are there any number of counts to do this or do we have to do this till we finish the entire chanting of the sloka ?

Answer  :

The best way to appease and satisfy Lord Ganesha is to perform “Dhorbhi Karanam” (also known as Thoppu Karanam). Dhorbi Karanam is the act of sitting and standing holding our ears with our hands crossed and to knock our forehead with our knuckles. We have to do the Dhorbi Karanam five times at once while chanting the sloka.  Also, according to the “Vinayaka Puranam” (also known as Ganesha Purana), we need to do this for the entire period of chanting the Ganapati Dyanam sloka “Shuklambaradharam” which is given below.

 

Shuklam-baradharam Vishnum Shashi-varnam Chatur-bhujam

Prasanna-vadhanam Dhyaayet Sarva Vighna Upashaanthaye

 

 

Meaning of the Shuklambaradharam Ganapati Dyanam Sloka :

We meditate on Lord Ganesha – who is clad in white (representing purity), who is all pervading (present everywhere), whose complexion is gray like that of ash (glowing with spiritual splendor), who has four arms, who has bright countenance (depicting inner calm and happiness) and who can destroy all obstacles (in our spiritual and worldly path).

Dharam – worn, adorned

Vishnum – all pervading

Shashi – moon, pure, white

Varnam – colour

Chatur- four

Bhujam -hands

Prasanna – happy

Vadhanam – face

Dhyaayeth – pray, meditate

Vighna – obstacles

Upa – near

Shaanthaye -silence or bliss
